Joined in prayer with hundreds of people "from different phases and moments in my life," Bishop-elect William Michael Mulvey reflected on the "commonality of two vigils" during evening vespers on March 24 at Corpus Christi Cathedral. The liturgy marked the vigils of the Solemnity of the Annunciations of the Lord and his ordination and installation as the eighth bishop of the Diocese of Corpus Christi.
"What was known from the beginning, God wanted to reveal to us," said the bishop. And God’s revelation was a plan that was announced at a certain time and through a simple virgin, who by saying "yes" had "to change her own plans as a human being."
Bishop Mulvey said that Mary is "the model person to let God’s plan be revealed in her own life and shared with others." The bishop added that Mary’s yes and her question of how such a thing could be showed that "her faith triumphed over her human reason" and that it is also the "story of each one of us."
In his remarks he also addressed the priests and reminded them of the words of St. Gregory, "First be purified and then purify others."
He said that for all people there are times when the answers may not be clear and "moments when we are asked to walk by faith."
