On Friday, April 24, amid cheers and shouts of "you look beautiful" from their classmates, Kaitlyn and Kelsey Majek, kindergarten students at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Elementary School, had their first haircut and then donated approximately four feet of hair to the Wigs for Kids program.
"The girls' donation to the Wigs for Kids was the kick off for a larger donation event to be held on Saturday, April 25 at John Paul II High School Centurion Fest. Today was the first time the girls have ever had their haircut. They have never had more than a gentle trim in their lives," stated Liann Majek, Kaitlyn and Kelsey's mom.
Visibly nervous, Kaitlyn and Kelsey sat back to back because they did not want to see each other receive her haircut.
The girls' parents, Charles and Liann provided moral support as each parent held their daughter's hand.
With each girl's hair braided into pony tails, stylist and Ss. Cyril and Methodius parent KiKi Garcia quickly cut off each of the braids. The strands were bagged for donation.
Liann Majek was overjoyed that her daughters had made a donation which would help others.
She explained that their family had been saying prayers for the ill children who will receive the hair.
"Every night we prayed for the children who have cancer. We hope the donations of Kaitlyn and Kelsey's hair will make their lives easier."
Perhaps the most excited person attending the event was Charles Majek.
"Bath time takes an hour and 45 minutes for both girls. It involves washing, drying and brushing their hair. I am looking forward to much shorter, quicker baths," said Charles.
Liann added, "On the days I am out of town because of work, Charles is in charge of getting the girls ready for school. It takes Charles 30 minutes to do the girls' hair for school. I have given the teachers at school hair supplies such as rubber bands and brushes so they can finish the job of fixing the girls' hair. Charles does not do hair very well."
Kelsey and Kaitlyn demonstrated what it feels like to have much shorter hair cuts when their mother twirled them around and their hair did not brush the ground.
"My head feels so much lighter," declared Kelsey.
