The Federation of Our Lady of Guadalupe Societies in the Diocese of Corpus Christi celebrated its fourth anniversary in May with the election of the 2010-2012 board of directors. Elected to lead the federation were Secretary Hilda Vela, Third Vice President Ricardo Verastiqui, Second Vice President Mary Garza, First Vice President Amalia "Molly" Morales, and President Maria Betancourt. Among the appointed officers and committee chairpersons are Historian Eva Lara, Parliamentarian Louis Hoelscher, Funeral Committee Antonia Riojas, and Telephone Committee Eloy Sosa. The rest of the board is in the process of being named or elected.
Among the many accomplishments of the previous two years were two celebrations for Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast Day featuring Paula DeAnda, Joshua Flores, Freddie Martinez, Carolina Salinas, and other local talents who paid homage to our Lady.
Three retreats were held, one of which was presented by Msgr. Eduardo Chávez, postulator for the cause for the canonization of Juan Diego; having the largest international membership in the Archicofradía of Santa María de Guadalupe based at the Basilica in Mexico City; and having approximately fifty persons attend the First International Marian Congress in Phoenix in August, 2009.
The federation also joined the Knights of Columbus in the pro-life march on April 30. The federation achieved many service projects and works of mercy. Membership in the Federation has grown and the meetings are now hosted by different societies throughout the diocese.
Immediate goals for the future include the finishing of a Federation web page, organizing a trip to the San Antonio Federation Conference in August, increasing membership, and reviving participation of societies who have become inactive in the Federation.
