Our Catholic faith is who we are," Jake Windnagle told a group of approximately 40 university students following Sunday Mass August 30. The Mass was celebrated by Father Paul Hesse, Diocesan Director of Campus Ministries, and marked the opening of the school year.
Windnagle is the newly appointed full-time campus minister at the John Henry Newman Catholic Student Center on the campus of Texas A&MCC. Windnagle continued saying with a smile, "I get very lonely here and bored, please come and see me. This is your home away from home. Stop by to talk, play games, study, or just drink coffee. I will always be here."
Windnagle began a Bible study course on Sep 2 at 6:00 p.m. at the center. The topic of the weekly, Tuesday night session, will be the Gospel of John.
Other plans include setting up a schedule for Eucharistic Adoration, times for morning and afternoon prayer, and a weekly Mass in addition to Sunday Mass.
Sunday Mass at the university chapel is at 4:00 p.m. "These prayer times are so important, especially during finals." he said.
Windnagle also spoke of the Center's ministry to feed the homeless, which is done every 3rd Sunday in the downtown area.
"We hope to develop a rich faith-life here through our prayer and volunteer service projects. We want our faith to have heart, not just be something rather empty," said Windnagle, a native of Buffalo, NY. He is a recent graduate of Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio. His wife, Angela, is the Youth Minister at St John the Baptist Parish.
Members of St. John's Knights of Columbus council #13250 prepared and served hamburgers and hot dogs for the students as part of the celebration.
President of the Newman Club, Courtney Lee, welcomed newcomers and urged students to sign available forms to join the Club, which will enable it to receive money from the University Activity Fund to subsidize its projects.
She then introduced other officers including club secretary Josh Stephens who said, one of the goals at he center was to find a way of offering many types of service programs which would enable such a diverse group as students are to find different ways of serving the Lord.
