Bishop Edmond Carmody welcomed the "Singles in Christ" to a special Mass and social held at Corpus Christi Cathedral on September 12 by explaining to the congregation that group members "strive to live the Gospel message of Christ while living in the single state, a unique vocation." In his homily Bishop Carmody spoke of the importance of "carrying your cross, whatever that might be, joyfully. It is the secret to true happiness."
The Mass is held annually for the members of the group. It is followed by a fellowship meal in St. Joseph's Hall. This year many of the group attended. Their Spiritual Advisor, Fr. James Vasquez, joined them.
Group president, Robert Palace explained that the members stay in touch mainly through mailings. "There are approximately 300 people on the mail list. Members receive an events calendar, which informs them of the monthly meetings, social occasions when members gather for a meal at a restaurant, and spiritual nights when they gather to pray." In addition, group members visit nursing homes as another way of living the gospel message. "We are always looking for new members," he said. "Singles have a lot to offer, they generally have more time to volunteer to the work of the church. We also try to help the vocation office," he said. "Faith motivates us to help those who need us," he said, reaffirming the spiritual and vocational aspect of living as a "Single in Christ."
