Father Sean James Noone, 84, passed away in San Antonio on Saturday, October 31. Having served primarily in Africa and south Texas, Father Noone was recently remembered for his gentleness and compassion.
"He was very spiritual, showed great compassion and was a good listener," said longtime friend, Father Michael Lenihan, who gave the homily for Father Noone's November 5 funeral Mass at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Church in Corpus Christi.
A rosary was recited before the Mass, which was presided by Bishop Edmond Carmody and concelebrated by over 30 priests. The bishop accompanied Father Noone's body to Ireland where he was buried on Nov. 8 in Killeen County, Galway.
"There was no dishonesty in the heart of Father Sean Noone," said Father Lenihan, who added that "Father Noone had a great gift for working with the sick . . . and in one-on-one counseling with people."
He noted that his friend's favorite hobby was reading. "When he was reading he was perfect and serene."
Father Noone was diagnosed with lung cancer in September of 2008. Father Lenihan noted how Father Noone was a source of joy and encouragement to the nursing facility that he spent his final days.
Father Noone was born on May 14, 1925, in Kilcorban, County Galway, Ireland. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 25, 1952, at the Cathedral of he Assumption in Thurles Ireland by Bishop Kinnane.
His priestly ministry included service in Africa, England and south Texas. Father Noone served in Tanzania from 1953 to 1963. After serving six years in London he came to south Texas and served in Laredo, Refugio, Corpus Christi, Beeville and Vattman.
He is preceded in death by his brothers Bill and Joe and three sisters, Mai Noone, Sr. Antoine, S.S.L. and Sr. Margaret S.S.L. (Sisters of St. Louis). He is survived by his sister-in-law, Kitty Noone and many nephews and nieces.
