On Jan. 18, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops will launch the national “9 Days for Life” campaign calling Catholics and the faithful together for a 9-day “digital pilgrimage” focusing on cherishing the gift of human life from conception to natural death. The campaign surrounds the annual Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children, which occurs on the anniversary of “Roe v. Wade,” the Supreme court decision that made abortion legal in the United States throughout pregnancy.

Sacred Heart School in Rockport, devastated by Hurricane Harvey, reopened an interim campus on Thursday, Jan. 4. The school was extensively damaged by the hurricane and was closed. A school staff of 24 welcomed 82 students to the second semester of the 2017-18 school year. The staff prepared the Msgr. Kihneman Activity Center as the Main Building of the interim campus which in combination with eight modular classrooms will house all students and staff.

Bishop Garriga Middle Preparatory School held its first STREAM Fair for the 2017-18 school year on Thursday, Nov. 16, which was the day of the school’s annual Thanksgiving Luncheon. STREAM projects were displayed in the hallways of the school’s main building.

The day after Hurricane Harvey made landfall, Father Mike Keucher called his mentor Msgr. Mark Svarczkopf and asked, “How can we do something to help people in Rockport?” This was not a randomly placed phone call. Msgr. Svarczkopf had helped with disaster relief after Hurricane Katrina and had significant experience organizing relief efforts. His reply to Father Keucher was, “Come with us when we go there in December.” Neither pastor knew there were connections to Rockport within their communities.

The Diocese of Corpus Christi will begin the new year searching for a new Cathedral choir director. Marty Wind, director of communications, said the diocese has begun a national search for a replacement for Lee Gwozdz, who had worked for the diocese for more than 30 years. Gwozdz notified the diocese of his retirement in a letter in mid-December, Wind said.

In the sacrament of penance (reconciliation) we prepare for Judgment Day by examining our conscience and confessing our sins while there is opportunity for forgiveness. The examination of conscience begins with the Ten Commandments, which articulate the moral law (Mt 19:16-17). In addition, we need to look within, to the seven capital sins, which are the root cause or “sin behind the sins.” Finally, our examination of conscience is not complete without the corporal works of mercy, as Jesus indicates in the parable of the sheep and goats (Mt 25:31-46).

The Legamaros, who have six children of their own, are the sole benefactors of the St. Gianna Molla House being built to help mothers in crisis pregnancies care for their children.
